ROOM

Room is a tale of a young girl who is kidnapped and kept hidden in the claustrophobic confines of one small room. After two years in there she has a son. We begin the film on his 5th birthday. Jack knows nothing else but ‘room’. Ma creates his world for him and Jack is happy there, imaginative and secure. But the strain of the situation is also wearing on Ma and as Jack becomes increasingly aware of ‘old Nicks’ disturbing evening visits, she decides it can’t go on.
Heart wrenching and very thought provoking. Its beautifully portrayed and acted through the parallel views of Jack and Ma whose relationship moves just like any mother and son. The focus on the love and relationships lift the viewer above the horror of the situation.
I was humbled by the ability of children to overcome and help those they love to also overcome. I was touched by the affirmation that above all, home and happiness is where the heart is. Or in Jacks case that life is nothing without Ma.
Room is beautiful, claustrophobic, hard to watch and life affirming.
